Because—unlike most people—creativity has been an integral part of my work life, I suspect that I bring a somewhat unique perspective to the matter, at least compared to non-design professionals. Until about a year ago, I was employed as a graphic designer. As a designer my job depended on my ability to develop creative solutions to my clients’ visual communication problems. This has required me to learn how to harness my creativity and draw upon it at will. That is to say that I have had to learn to turn my creativity on and off like a faucet. The common view of creativity—that one must wait for the Muse to strike—would seem to suggest that we have no control over our creativity. Rather, it is purely a function of the unconscious, to which we have limited direct access. In contrast, I firmly believe that if you are careful to keep the Muse well nourished, it is perfectly possible to call upon her whenever you so desire.
